Learning Standards
What are Learning Standards?
Learning standards are written statements of what children are expected to learn at each stage of development. This section of ReadTennessee.org is designed to address learning standards in two general areas of development – early learning (birth to age 5) and elementary school-aged learning (kindergarten to grade 3).
Common Core State Standards
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are specific learning standards that were created to set clear expectations of what students should know in each grade-level and subject and to ensure that every student who meets the standards graduates high school prepared for further education or the workforce. Adoption of the CCSS is voluntary, and to date, at least 40 states (including Tennessee) and the District of Columbia, have adopted the standards.
These standards establish what students need to learn, but not how teachers should teach. Instead, schools and teachers will decide how best to help students reach the standards.
The Standards will provide students, teachers, and parents with a shared understanding of what students are expected to learn. With students, parents, and teachers all on the same page and working together for shared goals, we can increase the likelihood that students will make progress each year and graduate from school prepared to succeed and build a strong future for themselves and the country.
Tennessee Early Learning Standards
Tennessee created a set of Early Learning Developmental Standards (TN ELDS) in 2004 to help all adults who care for children across the state understand appropriate practices for caring for children from birth to age five. The standards were developed to show the continuum of developmental milestones from birth to age five based on the research about process, sequences, and long term consequences of early learning and development.
