Jan has been the Director School-based Support Services, Tennessee Department of Education since 1989. As a part of her work, she

-Administers the evaluation program of all public and private school-administered infant-toddler, preschool programs and school-age care programs to assure students in public and private school-administered programs are participating in developmentally appropriate and environmentally safe programs to promote student success.
-
-Administers the family resource center initiative, assisting at-risk families in resolving home and community-based problems which diminish their children’s abilities to learn.

In addition, Jan Bushing has served as a state representative from the 56th district to the Tennessee General Assembly; served as chairman of the Metropolitan Nashville Davidson County Planning Commission; and served on several boards with a primary focus on child advocacy and quality of life issues. She is a graduate of Peabody College and Vanderbilt University. She has two adopted children and three grandchildren.
